Ad Tech PR Agency Kite Hill Curates Programmatic TV Discussion Ahead of New Fronts

Guest post from Alexandra Huber, Account Manager at Kite Hill PR.

To celebrate the upcoming digital content NewFronts, the NY AdTech Group,  organized by Kite Hill PR founder and CEO Tiffany Guarnaccia, hosted a Meetup on Wednesday.

The Meetup, which was hosted at Tremor Video’s offices in Times Square, featured a panel on the industry trends and what’s new in programmatic TV. Panelists included veterans and leaders of the advertising industry: Cordie DePascale, VP of Product Management at Mediaocean; Richard Hall, VP of TV Strategy at Videology; Tim Ware, VP of Advanced TV at Tremor Video; and Marshall Wong, SVP of Product and Market Development at Tapad. The panel touched on a number of specific topics related to programmatic TV, specifically, where the topic stands today, what companies are benefiting from it,  and where the industry is going. The panelists’ varied backgrounds and expertise provided valuable, poignant answers to some of the biggest questions surrounding programmatic TV.

“The very term ‘programmatic TV’, is somewhat controversial,” said journalist Todd Wasserman, the panelist moderator, to kick off the panel.  “We shouldn’t think of programmatic as a binary term,” said Richard Hall. “We should think about it as a spectrum.”

“Set the foundation, enable future technology to traditional systems and work with partners to push it forward,” said Cordie DePascale.

The panelists stressed the importance of attribution, specifically how both vendors and brands need to do a better job of gathering and filtering the wealth of data at their fingertips.

What’s holding up adoption of programmatic TV?

“It’s still in the early stages, a lot of people are still doing things the old way,” Tim Ware.

“Programmatic isn’t a revolution, it’s an evolution,” said Hall. “What’s happening is a market shift. The aggregators offer some great, exciting inventory. The issue that many of us encounter is, ‘what am I really getting from the aggregator?’ When it comes down to it, we’re getting a lot of opaqueness.”

He continued, ‘The smart aggregators are starting to see this, and starting to put their foot on more solid ground. There needs to be more definition because the measurements and standards aren’t as good as they need to be.”

“Aggregators serve as an excellent stepping stone to get the right information,” said Ware.

“90 percent addressable linear is unavailable because that understanding of the household is not being provided,” said Marshall Wong. “Until there is a change the pool of addressable linear remains incredibly small.”

Media convergence could be the key to unlocking programmatic TV efficiently. What needs to happen for convergence to be possible?

“There are too many silos,” said Hall. “The true value of TV advertising is being concealed. Now we have attribution connecting the dots and using the data more effectively. Now we’re connecting the dots and the data joins the dots. Data shines a spotlight on what was previously hidden.”

“Think about what kind of data you have with people watching TV on smart devices. It’s not just about the TV experience, its about the other apps they’re interacting with,” said DePascale.

It will be interesting to see where the world of programmatic TV goes from here but the consensus is that it will continue its exponential growth. IDC predicts extremely rapid adoption of programmatic TV advertising technology. In 2017, programmatic advertising spend in linear TV will outgrow that in streaming video. By 2019, programmatic TV spend will be bigger than RTB, the most important programmatic segment today.

2015: Year in Review

It’s been a year of inspiring, breakthrough moments for Kite Hill PR. We expanded our team and our client base in the ad tech, media, marketing and technology sectors. As we look back, here are some of our most exciting client wins from 2015.

Kite Hill PR clients had big funding news in 2015. Fyber announced a raise of $112M in convertible bond, covered on VentureBeat. Stringr, a news startup, came to us to jumpstart their media coverage; TechCrunch covered their raise of $1.5M to build a news footage marketplace. And PulsePoint raised $30M to get serious about M&A, as covered in AdExchanger

Owned events helped clients standout, especially Tapad's Unify Tech '15 summit on cross-screen marketing. The summit covered a lot of ground, including a keynote from Deanie Elsner, former EVP and CMO of Kraft Foods Group, which was reported by MediaPost. We were excited that Kite Hill Experiences was working behind-the-scenes for the second year in a row.

Speaking of events, Communications Week reached a new level of awareness. With a full week of programming featuring notable speakers, our event's social reach hit a high of 1.2M. As Adweek’s PRNewser put it, at Communications Week it was all about “forging a path to innovation.”

Kite Hill PR helped startups from around the globe enter the US. While “cracking the US isn’t always easy for international ad tech companies,” as our client S4M put it in AdExchanger, we’ve driven consistent coverage for them in the US marketplace.

Ad blocking and new social metrics guidelines were great opportunities for news hijacking. Our clients took a stance on major industry issues. Fyber’s thoughts in ClickZ on ad blocking is a great example. Crowdtap’s commentary piece in MediaPost on the need for new social media metric guidelines is another.

The Kite Hill Content Studio continued to grow. Offset by Shutterstock leveraged the Kite Hill Content Studio for executive thought leadership on the topic of new trends in visual storytelling, which appeared on The Huffington Post.

Infographics drove earned media. Interesting data wins every time. While we’ve seen some infographic fatigue, our work with Adweek on behalf of Crowdtap was a great example of how to standout.

Our clients took center stage in 2015 and will continue to do so in 2016. PulsePoint’s participation in the the IAB Programmatic Summit was well received by industry insiders. Crowdtap packed the house at ad:tech NY 2015. We’re excited for Federated Media's John McCarus is joining some of the industry's leading execs on stage at the Digiday WTF Ad Blocking conference coming up in January.

Cheers to a successful 2016!

Kite Hill Team Fun: Sailing the Hudson

Before we headed into a busy fall season, the team took some time out to sail the Hudson and toast to a successful summer 2015.
KITE HILL continues to skyrocket in growth. In July, we welcomed seasoned PR expert Alex Huber to our team as an Account Manager. Exponential Interactive, a known category leader in the advertising technology industry, joined KITE HILL's quickly expanding client list.

Kite Hill Hosts NY Ad Tech Meetup on Video Ad Trends

As a leading ad tech pr agency, we're always excited to host events for the NY Ad Tech community.

Recently, we hosted a panel at COWORK|RS on the latest video ad tech trends ahead of the Digital Content New Fronts.

VideoInk moderated the panel with our client Viewbix. A hot debate of the evening: why is a video view is still the metric of success for video ad performance?

Video views are defined in different ways, and Jonathan Stefansky, co-founder & CEO of Viewbix argues that engagement is the real metric to watch.

Check out the panel coverage on AlleyWatch.

Our Top 10 "Hits" of 2014

As we welcome 2015, it's a great time to take a step back and look at some of Kite Hill PR's exciting moments and great successes in the digital media and communications industries.

1. We kicked off the year working with the folks at Social Media Week to handle all of the press for their February 2014 New York City show and launched their first "campus." From broadcast placements to online blog hits and new media relationships, we significantly increased media coverage for the New York show

2.  Early in 2014, Kite Hill expanded with the hiring of our rising PR star, Jodi Kovacs, as a PR associate. Jodi joined Kite Hill PR from a smaller consumer-focused PR agency, excited to learn about tech PR.

3. In April, we continued to grow our client base in the ad tech industry by adding Tapad as a client.  We worked with Tapad to launch their event series, Tapad Unify Tech '14. We packed the house and secured coverage in top industry trades including AdExchanger, MediaPost, DM News, iMedia Connection and more.

4. Kite Hill PR's first client, PulsePoint, continued to shine in the media.  In April, we secured front page coverage in the Crain's New York Business article, "Wall Street Goes Nuts Over These Mad Men."

5. As the weather warmed, the coverage of our client issuu, heated up, too. To support the product launch of issuu's new social sharing feature, Clip, we created an online press conference and secured coverage in industry and tech blogs, including this piece in The Next Web, "Issuu Clip Helps Users and Publishers Share Content."

6. In July, Kite Hill PR took over the NY Ad Tech Meetup group, bringing this community of over 500 advertising technologists back to life.

7. Continued team expansion brought the hiring of Stephanie Tackach as our newest Director at Kite Hill PR. Stephanie was formerly at Sapient Nitro and is an experienced PR pro.

8. Unbridled excitement was in the air when we launched the public relations industry's firstCommunications Week.  Similar to Advertising Week but for PR professionals, this conference took the industry by storm in its first year.

9. We continued to expand our client base and added the video advertising startup, Viewbix to our client roster. We secured coverage of Viewbix's recent funding in TechCrunch, "Viewbix Raises $3M To Wrap Video Ads Inside Interactive Players."

10. In December, we sparked an industry conversation about the hottest trends in mobile advertising and predictions for 2015, with the final NY Ad Tech Meetup of the year, featuring speakers from betaworks, PadSquad and Undertone.

Thanks to everyone who helped make 2014 such a big success. We're looking forward to all of the exciting challenges and opportunities that 2015 has in store.

#AdTechNY Is In Town!

Ah, ad:tech. It's one of the industry's early shows that still gets a lot of attention, and for good reason. This morning's opening keynote covered how brands will change the world.

Walmart.com's Vice President of Marketing, Brian Monahan, joined the panel and addressed a common buzzword: innovation.

When questioned if Walmart.com is innovating versus doing what the marketplace demands, he answered, "Be committed to staying close to your customer, and you'll find new ways in." Too many companies and businesses lose sight of that point. You need to always put your target customer in the center of your activities, especially for your PR efforts. Develop and distribute messages for your users, not for the media.

Unilever's Babs Rangaiah, Vice President of Global Media Innovation & Ventures, was also on the panel. I love his takeaway tip to focus on MVP. He noted, "If your are a brand or a platform and you want to be successful, focus on MVP: Made for Mobile, Visually Social, and Personalized." The company's Dove 'Real Beauty' ad campaign is a great example that embodies all of these points.

Beyond campaign and brand specific thoughts, panelists also weighed in on the next big trends to watch.  I agree with Rangaiah.  Programmatic is a huge ad tech trend to watch, as today it is still in the early stages. We're developing a system for serving and targeting ads that will become more centralized.

That's a big discussion at #adtechNY and here at Kite Hill PR. There's no denying that programmatic will play a big role in the advertising industry's future.

We love learning about our clients' industries. In July, Kite Hill PR tuned into the Ad Exchanger State of Programmatic Media webinar that was hosted by ‪@joannaoconnell

One of the interesting takeaways? It's not just publishers who find the current programmatic ecosystem confusing, it's also agencies and the tech providers themselves.  It's time for more industry education!

Reaching Those Hard-To-Reach Millennials: Why User-Generated Content is More Influential Than Any Other Content

Our client Crowdtap, a Leading Social Influence Marketing Platform, recently released groundbreaking research during SXSWi on media consumption habits of millennials.

The study (which can be found here), conducted in partnership with Ipsos, found that millennials spend a whopping 18 hours each day consuming media including TV, social media, magazines and radio.  Of these 18 hours, the study found that millennials trust user-generated content (UGC) 50% more than other forms of media and that they find UGC to be 35 percent more memorable than other forms of media.

"Media consumption is no longer something that is sequential. Today's brands can't just focus on where someone is--they are on all types of media at all times. They need to focus on where consumers are most engaged to cut through the noise," says Anna Kassoway, Crowdtap's CMO.

The research was covered by Inc. Magazine, Entrepreneur, MediaPost, Mobile Marketer, Social Times and more.
