There was a time when getting noticed online followed a familiar playbook. You wrote keyword-rich headlines, optimized for search, built backlinks and hoped your name appeared when someone typed something in.

That formula hasn’t disappeared, but the way people discover information is evolving.

AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity are accelerating this shift. Instead of scanning pages of search results, people are asking questions and getting a direct answer. And that answer often shapes what they believe, who they trust, and what decision they make next.

As these tools become gateways to knowledge, the metrics that once defined online presence like follower counts or viral posts are beginning to lose their weight. AI doesn’t prioritize flash. It prioritizes relevance, clarity and trustworthy sourcing. This is causing a deeper shift in how credibility is measured, which is not just by algorithms, but by investors, partners and communities.

This shift is especially important for startups, where perception and traction are everything. As Francesca Conti, Web3 advisor and early-stage investor at CV VC, puts it:

“From an investment perspective, I’m more curious to review projects with a strong, engaged  core community than those relying on inflated follower count. I believe we’ll go back to basics and expect to see a rise in more intentional, bespoke, principle-driven networks that reflect real traction, not just noise.”

For Conti, this is not a critique of performative growth, but a signal that measurable credibility and discoverability are becoming central to how companies earn trust.

“In addition to due diligence and confidence in a founder’s technical and business abilities, their need to be discoverable is more important than ever. Startups that lean into AI tooling to connect with their audience and educate with clarity are setting the foundation for long-term relevance.”

Think about a founder preparing for a pitch and asking ChatGPT to list the top players in their space but their brand doesn’t show up. Or a CMO checking Perplexity to better understand how their category is being discussed, only to see their competitor’s messaging reflected back while their own is nowhere to be found. With ChatGPT now exceeding 500 million weekly users, according to OpenAI’s CEO, each time your brand is absent from an AI-generated answer, it quietly reinforces someone else’s relevance while erasing your own.

Search engines offer options.

AI tools deliver conclusions.

If your brand hasn’t been consistently represented in credible, structured places such as articles, interviews, databases and awards, it may not be recognized by the systems shaping those answers. And when people receive answers that feel confident and complete, research shows they don’t always stop to question what was left out.

So, how do you make sure your brand shows up?

  • Start by getting clear. If your company does ten things but one sets you apart, that one thing needs to lead every story. Vagueness is forgettable while specificity sticks with both people and machines.
  • Next, build a presence in trusted spaces. That means being featured in earned media, sharing your expertise in interviews, appearing in structured profiles and building citations that models reference. If your story lives only on your owned channels or in paid ads, it may never enter the memory of the tools shaping how people perceive your brand.
  • And finally, show up with consistency. Visibility in the AI era isn’t something you buy once but something you reinforce over time. As Conti noted, “Community and authenticity are paramount,” especially for early-stage companies without traditional traction metrics. AI is shifting influence toward brands with clear narratives and focused followings rather than those relying on inflated metrics or large ad budgets.

At Kite Hill, we help emerging tech companies earn visibility in a shifting landscape, especially as discovery moves from search engines to AI-powered answers.
